Being within this profession has always been my childhood dream. I matriculated in 2017 and embarked on my university career in 2018. I completed my Bachelor of Arts Undergraduate degree in 2021, majoring in Psychology and Anthropology. I then completed my Honours in Psychology in 2021 (with distinction). I began my Masters of Arts in Community-Based Counselling Psychology Degree in 2022 and am now a registered psychologist with the HPCSA and BHF. All of my degrees were obtained through the University of the Witwatersrand.
My Masters included practical and theoretical training. The first year of my Masters involved providing therapy to students registered at the University of the Witwatersrand as well as going to Mookgopong, Limpopo on the Transnet Phelophepa Train for 2 weeks. My Masters thesis investigated resilience in students who experienced childhood poverty. The second year of my Masters was my internship year which I completed at PsyCaD at the University of Johannesburg. This provided me with great holistic training and more experience with a range of various psychological difficulties, as well as working with a crisis line.
The therapy space should be safe, comforting, challenging, and effective. It is crucial to provide clients with the best possible care, ensuring that the approach taken is suitable for their presenting problems, needs, and goals. My approach is focused on adjusting the space to each client's individual needs. Every story, feeling, or emotion is valuable and important. I have special interest in anxiety, depression, grief, relational issues, adjustment issues, and trauma. I work with and have been formally trained in the following theoretical frameworks/modalities:
A Japanese art form called Kintsugi embodies the principle of Wabi-Sabi (accepting imperfections). This has inspired part of my approach to therapy as I feel every person has their own set of unique qualities and experiences that make them beautiful. Difficult past experiences teach us something and challenge us. I work to facilitate a process of self-discovery, acceptance and love. By working through our challenges, we find the strength to shine.
